CIBC Theatre
Located in the Chicago Loop, the CIBC Theatre, formerly PrivateBank Theatre, is a popular venue with a storied past. Perhaps most famously, it’s home to Hamilton in Chicago, and many theatergoers have found convenient CIBC Theatre parking ahead of the curtain through ParkWhiz.
The CIBC Theatre was constructed in 1906 and named the Majestic Theatre. At the time, they specialized in vaudeville performances. After a period of ownership by the Orpheum chain, the theater closed during the Great Depression in 1932 and reopened as the Sam Shubert Theatre in 1945. Popular musicals of the day like A Chorus Line and South Pacific graced the stage. The Shubert Organization sold the theater in 1991 to the Nederlander Organization of Broadway fame.
Top billings in the late 90’s and early aughts included Cabaret, The Goodbye Girl, and Spamalot. The theater was remodeled from 2005-2006, then renamed the LaSalle Bank Theatre. The space has since undergone a series of name changes as the building has switched hands: in 2008 it became the Bank of America Theatre and in late 2015 it was renamed the PrivateBank Theatre. In 2017, the theater took its current name for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, as CIBC Theatre.
Recent performances include Kinky Boots and The Book of Mormon, but the most famous play in recent memory to take up residence on this stage is Hamilton: An American Musical. Months of sold out shows have kept the CIBC Theatre busy since 2016!
