Daley Plaza
In a city as large as Chicago, citizens need a central location for accessing the services of Cook County, the circuit courts and municipal government; luckily, Chicagoans have the Daley Center, which fulfills that function and much more. Located in the middle of the Loop, the building is named after Richard J. Daley, the elder of the two Mayor Daleys. Built out of a variety of self-weathering steel known as Cor-Ten, the dull rusty-orange colored Daley Center contains offices for Cook County, courtrooms for the Circuit Court of Cook County, city offices and a vast law library. The plaza next to the building contains a 50-foot tall, 162-ton avant-garde sculpture crafted by Pablo Picasso as a gift for the city, built of the same Cor-Ten material as the Daley Center, often simply called “the Chicago Picasso.” Events are occasionally held outside the Center, most notably the Christmastime German market known as Christkindlmarkt. Both the demand for city and county services as well as events can make it hard to find a spot, so the crafty city-dweller will book Daley Center parking ahead of time with ParkWhiz.
