Like many music venues in Chicago, Park West started out as a theater. It began life in 1925 as a vaudeville theater, the Park Lane Theater. As the Vaudeville scene thinned out around the onset of the Great Depression, it functioned as a movie theater, going under the moniker of the Town Theater from about 1935 to the 1960s, before eventually becoming a nightclub in the 1970s. Owned by JAM productions, Park West’s current incarnation came into being in May 1977 and has been serving the Lincoln Park area ever since.
The building has 11,000 square feet of space, including seven bars, exquisite booths, two balconies and five tiers of levels, though no official place for Park West parking. The theater can contain up to 900 guests, but it also works with smaller groups, around 100 to 700. The theater staff have equipped the building with the latest technology, including two video projectors, an expert sound system, a bounty of proficient theater lighting and 18 LCD monitors. Past concerts include artists such as the B-52s, Joe Jackson, Tom Waits, Todd Rundgren and Aretha Franklin.
